The government is planning to import rice stocks sufficient for one and a half months and keep it as a buffer to face future situations said Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka.
The government has a rice stock of 1,10,000 tons but the yala season harvest will be available only by about February March next year. The government will issue a percentage of the available stocks to the market.
In the event the rice stock are over the traders will hide rice stocks and there will be a drought in the future as well which will result in a shortage of food. To face all these scenarios we decided to import rice stocks said Minister Karunanayaka.
